Drive inland from Fins on the Sharqiya coastline, up the loose, winding track that heads up the mountain, and eventually you arrive at the edge of the Jabel Bani Jabir plateau, over 1000 meters above sea level. Here, Omani families live in much the same way as their proud ancestors. The air is clear and the landscape is untouched by the modern world. Shortly after cresting the last incline on the bumpy track, the plateau opens up before us into the distance. The seeming emptiness actually protects many secrets, including the one we're here to see.
It's easy to drive right past it without even knowing it's there; a simple hole in the ground. There's no sign posts or safety fences. No visitor centre or souvenier stand. Only a hole, just big enough to drive your car into. Not that you would want to, because this is the entrance to the Majlis Al Jinn, the second largest subterranean cave in the world!
